Client: Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC)
Project: Chemistry and Sport Website
Summary
The Royal Society of Chemistry commissioned By Design to design, develop and manage a teacher resource website themed on chemistry and its impact on sport.
Objective
To produce a teacher resource website that combined a sporting calendar of events with the chemistry behind a range of sports. The site was created to engage students by profiling the variety of chemistry behind well known sports and sporting events.
Solution
By Design developed a rolling calendar of sporting events, which is updated regularly, featuring events from cycling to swimming and diving to F1. Behind certain events there is a bespoke chemistry module that teachers can download and use within lesson time to promote a specific chemistry idea or concept. Each module contains three elements; a PowerPoint presentation, a set of Teachers Notes designed to assist the teacher with the module and a student worksheet, to be completed following the PowerPoint presentation.
The modules are all (England) curriculum based and available for 7-11, 11-14, 14-16 & 16-18 year olds. (Key Stages 2 – 5 in England).
Results
Through a login system and monthly statistical site analysis we have seen the site become increasingly popular with teachers returning to download new modules as and when they become available. Originally commissioned in 2007, the site now has 20 modules available with a further 13 to come during 2009.
