CLIENT: BIRMINGHAM AND SOLIHULL CONNEXIONS
Project: SpORTED activity camp
Background
Birmingham and Solihull Connexions is a youth service providing advice, guidance, support and personal development services for young people in the region. They were looking for companies to help them provide activities during school holidays for young people as part of the government-funded Positive Activities for Young People (PAYP) scheme.
Learn by Design was chosen to provide Olympic-themed sporting 'camps', alongside other companies providing arts, theatre and crafts events.
Action
Learn by Design devised a weekly programme of activities, called SpORTED, based at a school location in Birmingham.
Promoting the values of fair play, personal excellence and cultural exchange, and complemented by Learn by Design's proven track record of delivery, the week was designed to provide a mix of sporting, cultural and personal development activities.
Specific objectives included:
- Allowing students to experience and participate in new sports
- Promoting the values of equity and fair play
- Allowing participants to work individually and as part of a team
- Improving awareness of the Olympic movement and it's values (for the Summer 2004 activity weeks as the Olympic Games in Athens was taking place)
- Improving students' personal development skills and motivation to achieve success
- Providing students with a greater cultural understanding
- Providing a fun and interactive learning environment
- Providing a rewarding and enjoyable experience for the young people
Result
SpORTED is a highly successful programme which has engaged young people in exciting activities in the school holidays. Learn by Design continues to work with Birmingham and Solihull Connexions on their PAYP programme.
