New 'STEM to Stadium' Win
By Design are delighted to announce their new ‘STEM to Stadium’ programme. This new initiative is being brought to Nottinghamshire schools by the Nottinghamshire: City & County Employment and Skills Board in conjunction with Nottinghamshire County Council’s Economic Regeneration and Young Peoples Services divisions. It is also part of Nottinghamshire County Council’s Next Generation Programme.
The programme uses the theme of the London 2012 Olympic Games and the Great Britain team holding camp at Loughborough University, in order promote STEM (Science, technology, Engineering and Maths) skills to young people, via the task of developing their own version of an pre - Olympic team holding/training camp.
Targeting Year 9 students, the programme will bring together a mix of employability skills, combined with exposure to a range of STEM skills necessary for employment in the various fields associated with the development and services required to support the Great Britain Olympic team.
The programme is split into 2 distinct days, namely:
Day 1 - Site visit to Loughborough University hosted by an Olympic / World Athlete
The students will spend the first day of the programme visiting and investigating various parts of the Olympic facility mix at Loughborough University, which is likely to include:
- Sports Technology Institute Testing Laboratories
- Sports Facilities - athletics indoor and outdoor stadium, gymnastics centre and powerbase weight training centre
- Accommodation Block
- English Institute of Sport Physiotherapy and Medical Centre
At each of the venues students will have the opportunity to meet with and question relevant professionals about their STEM skills and their career path to their current job. They will also investigate practical implications of the facilities with a view to generating ideas and thoughts for their project. The day will also include presentations and soft-skills workshops to assist students in their task.
This day will focus on the further development of the group ideas and preparations for their presentation. Together with workshops and project time, students will also have an interactive presentation skills session designed to assist them with their final presentation. The groups will also have access to a small group of athletes and experts from related STEM fields on the day, who will also be acting as the judging panel for the final presentations.
Students will be encouraged to work under their own initiative between the 2 days, furthering their knowledge and their project. The students will also be able to work towards achieving the CREST Bronze Award during this programme.
